Great organizations, large and small, know that the key to survival and marketplace competitiveness is anchored in their ability to be visionary, strategic and agile. Status quo, while operative today, can easily become an organization’s bane tomorrow. This strategic mindset applies to the development and replacement of leadership as well. However an alarming number of organizations do not have structured succession management processes in place.

Succession management is a holistic system that targets in on mission critical positions ensuring that talent is identified, available and ready to step into leadership roles when the need arises. Given today’s labour landscape, it is even more imperative that sound and dynamic succession management processes are in place. In short, the demand of effective leaders is outstripping the supply and major companies are ill prepared to address this.

On a hard-factor side, succession planning will ensure that an organization’s strategy can be successfully carried out in the future—and also by the most capable people in its workforce. Finally, succession planning can help increase employee morale, reduce turnover and encourage employees to develop themselves while increasing their own performance.

How you do ensure that the next line of managers and supervisors are ready to perform when they are called upon to do so. A manager’s first position and role as a supervisor is critical to their professional future. Time and again, research show that the biggest mistake new supervisors make is their inability to adapt and develop newly required managerial skills to perform their role effectively.

Every company struggles with the transitioning of individual performers into the management role. In many cases, the organisation loses a great individual contributor and gains a mediocre manager.

New managers need to become comfortable and confident in supervising direct reports who were formerly peers. In addition, they need to transition their focus from maintaining their own specific technical skill, goals, and deadlines to managing these aspects for others. They are now in a position where they need to be open to upward feedback, actively motivating and providing feedback to others, reinforcing good performance, and mastering the art of delegation.

Transitioning into a management role for the first time does not need to be hard. But it takes forethought and the ability to be introspective and self-regulatory. It’s not business as usual because now, even though you may already have longstanding and strong relationships at work, the expectations are different. It’s important that you realize that your focus needs to shift and how you communicate with former peers must change.

This 1-Day workshop will give the participants the crucial foundational skills to shift from being an individual contributor to a well-respected manager who can achieve team success and drive bottom-line performance.
