When dealing with people on a day-to-day basis it is virtually impossible to avoid having to deal with a range of human problems and personal grievances: from interpersonal differences and reactive behaviour at work, serious personal or family issues which interfere with work, to questions of psychological and emotional fragility. Basic counselling skills are becoming increasingly crucial to empower HR staff, managers and supervisors to intervene effectively with such problems to foster interpersonal harmony and thereby maintain optimum productivity levels. This workshop will focus on developing the basic skill competencies of attending, clarifying, empathizing that form the basis of counselling practice and the skilful use of questions to promote insight and understanding. These skills enable us to engage in effective listening so as to empower staff, as well as to dialogue with them to promote mutual understanding and the willingness to co-operate. It will also explore the dimensions of the counselling process as well as the specific factors that come into play when these are applied in a corporate context. Participants will be invited to submit actual case studies from personal experience for exploration and effective resolution during the workshop. Participants will benefit from a hands-on approach and be actively involved in role plays, obtaining and giving valuable feedback, case study discussions as well as drawing exercises. The use of video input will maximize and maintain interest level. To optimize skills acquisition the two days will be staggered over a period of one week allowing skills practice between sessions and the opportunity on the second day to report, reflect and explore and learn from challenges actually experienced.
The workshop is targeted at HR staff as well as managers, supervisors who are engaged with people management and any corporate staff who want to advance their career path by maximizing their management skills.
